New Tractors

We had to make a quick trip to the local John Deere shop this morning. H was a superstar while we waited for P to get a new battery for our mower. Since he was so awesome, he got to walk out with three new tractors.

Almost Garden Time–Compost + Earthworms

These crazy warm temperatures lately have had P itching to get our garden going. When it hit 65° last Sunday, he finally went for it.

Last year he built an awesome compost bin based on one from the book The New Victory Garden. We added to it over the last year with table scraps and leftover garden vegetation and now it's a beautiful dark rich compost. The plan is to spread it over the whole garden, but for right now he’s started out with the asparagus beds.

Good lord I can’t wait for asparagus.

Of course, he had a little helper. And by little, I mean he was very little help.

(I’m just realizing that I wasn’t really helpful at all either. But if I help, who the heck is going to take pictures?)

It’s a good thing he’s cute. Please note the UD hat. Go Blue Hens!

Now, it should be noted that I’m not a big fan of getting my hands dirty. I will go back into the house to get garden gloves if necessary.

Henry does not seem to have this problem. In fact, I'm fairly certain that he’s not a big fan of keeping his hands CLEAN.

Case in point: he and his daddy (mostly his daddy) decided it would be fun to dig for earthworms.

Now, I have no problem with worms. They help to aerate the soil and provide nice little tunnels for water to get through when it rains. And their, ahem, waste acts as a fertilizer.

But I’m a girl, and I don’t want to touch them.

These two do not seem to have that problem.

Gross.

So what is everyone else doing to get ready for spring? Any composters? Garden prep? Kids that can’t keep their hands clean? (Today P spread chicken manure on what will be the corn field this year, which is also gross but such a great fertilizer).
